A visual history of the University of Surrey
'Understanding the Real World' is a
prestigious coffee table book, beautifully illustrated, and providing a
detailed history of the campus and its people over the last 36 years.
The new history of the university contains a wealth of illustrations,
both from the University's own archives and from other sources - everything
from an illustration of the then Prince of Wales unveiling the foundation stone
of Battersea Polytechnic in 1891 to the initiation of the free festival and
gigs on campus by bands such as Led Zeppelin. The more recent development of
Surrey Satellites and the Federal University are also covered in depth.
The 224 page history covers the three main periods of the University's
life in Guildford, together with its earlier incarnations in Battersea, from
early planning and establishment of the University at Guildford, through the
years of consolidation and the beginnings of the Research Park, to the recent
past and the and the rapid acceleration in growth to the University's current
status as a leading centre of excellence in teaching and research.
